10/19/2012

Mumbai -- Starbucks Coffee Co. on Friday entered its 61st country with the opening of its first store in India, in a historic building in southern Mumbai. The store is owned and operated by Tata Starbucks Limited, the 50/50 joint venture between Starbucks and Tata Global Beverages Limited. The company plans to open two additional stores in Mumbai next week before launching in New Delhi in early 2013.

“Together, our two companies are bringing an unparalleled experience to India customers. We are investing for the long-term and see great potential for accelerated growth in India,” said Howard Schultz, chairman, president and CEO, Starbucks.

The two-level coffeehouse in Mumbai is designed to reflect Starbucks coffee heritage and embrace the local culture, with the artifacts, Indian teakwood furniture, floor design and interiors created by local craftsmen and artists. Painted vintage trunks and old leather-bound books enhance the atmosphere. The items on the menu reflect local as well as Starbucks standard fare.

Tata and Starbucks announced the strategic joint venture partnership – Tata Starbucks Limited, to open Starbucks stores in India in January 2012.
